After a week filled with free lattes and a visit from their namesake mascot, Donkey Coffee rounds off their 10th anniversary celebration on an energetic high note this Friday night with local bands Friends In Distraction and The Lost Boys.

Starting off the night is Friends In Distraction, which began as the solo act of Dan Baker, the band's lead singer, acoustic guitarist and synthesizer player. After playing at all the local venues around town, the Ohio University sophomore joined musical forces with lead guitarist Garrett Hood and African drum aficionado Dylan Sams to create a more balanced, full sound.

Although they explore many different styles, the band's core lies in folk punk music, and can be heard especially through their loud and fast paced acoustic noise.

"It's really cool that we get to fit into both the folk scene in Athens and the punk scene because it really expands our opportunities for where we can play," said Baker

The trio also frequently features guests musicians.

"It's always a lot of fun and very insightful to have people who are not necessarily 'permanent members' of the band around, because the more people you have involved, the more life and the greater scope of interpretation the piece of music is going to have," Baker said.

Their love of collaboration is seen greatly in the band's EP that was released December of last year, which was made with the help of a handful of players outside of the official group. Entitled Third Down, the five-song record showcases the charming, upbeat attitude of the band that hopefully will come out in their live performance.

Despite Baker living across the hall from The Lost Boys member Ben Leeson, Friday will be the first time the two bands will play a show together. Like FID, Leeson and band mates Mitchell Toler and Kyle Stansell all bring a lively energy to both the stage presence and the songs.

With their indie folk-rock sound, the group's harmonic talent is displayed from their original songs to covers like MGMT's "Kids."

Altogether, The Lost Boys and Friends In Distraction find common ground in fun and folk, two words that perfectly fit into the Donkey venue and the Athens' music scene.

The show begins at 9 p.m. at Donkey with an entrance fee of $3, a small price to pay for a night of spirited local tunes.
