The Nelsonville Music Festival (NMF) announced Mavis Staples, a Kennedy Center honoree and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, as the 15th-annual festival’s Sunday headliner last Wednesday. Staples will join other performers–including Tyler Childers, The Breeders and Death Cab for Cutie–for the four-day event in June.

Staples’ performance will bring the festival to a close on Sunday, June 9. She’s currently on tour promoting her latest album Live in London (released Feb. 8, 2019), which she recorded at London’s Union Chapel and produced herself. Following her set at Nelsonville, Staples will head abroad to continue touring.
Staples played at NMF for the first time in 2015 but has been involved in music much longer. Over 70 years ago, Staples got her start with her family’s group, The Staple Singers, which won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. In her career, she’s released over a dozen albums and has worked with artists including Prince, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, George Jones and Arcade Fire. Staples was also inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017, and, one year later, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award through the National Arts Awards.
The NMF will be held June 6-9, 2019 at Robbins Crossing on the Hocking College campus at 3301 Hocking Parkway, Nelsonville, Ohio. Weekend passes for all four days of the festival are currently being sold for $145, but they are subject to raise in price by $5 every two weeks until the event, where they will be sold for $180. Advance single-day tickets are also on sale for $55, $75, $90 and $55, respectively. The festival lineup, performance schedules, tickets and other information are available at nelsonvillefest.org.
