This announcement was first made on Twitter by Lopez and Shakira at 3:33 p.m. on September 26. The artists posted pictures of themselves together with the date of Super Bowl LIV: February 2, 2019.
After the artists made the announcement, the National Football League and Pepsi, the primary sponsor of the Super Bowl, both took to their respective Twitter pages to confirm the news. Additional statements were then released from both companies discussing the announcement, according to People Magazine.
“We are so excited to announce that global superstars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will take the stage together for the very first time at the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show,” said Adam Harter, the Senior Vice President of Sports, Media and Entertainment for PepsiCo in an official statement. “We’ve been working closely behind-the-scenes with our longstanding partners at the NFL, and now alongside Roc Nation to bring these mega superstars together. It is a testament to our partnership and commitment to push the envelope of what is possible.”
Roc Nation, an entertainment company owned by rapper and business mogul Jay-Z, will produce the show, adding more celebrity power to an already star-studded event. Roc Nation will also consult the NFL on other live events due to a large-scale collaboration between Jay-Z and the NFL, according to CNBC.
2019 has been a big year for Lopez, who starred in recent blockbuster Hustlers, a film based on a 2015 article detailing the true story of a group of New York strippers. As for Shakira, her film Shakira in Concert: El Dorado World Tour is set to hit theaters on November 13.
Super Bowl LIV will air on Fox on February 2, 2019, and the event will be held at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
