What’s Going On: October 2019

Witches, warlocks, vampires and great concerts: with spooky season just around the corner, these upcoming concerts around Athens will fill your Halloween with awesome live music.

Who: Boy Jorts, Ready Aim Flowers, Electric Guitar
When: October 3, 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

Boy Jorts is a local band described as a mix “between SpongeBob-core and a mental breakdown.” Opening will be Ready Aim Flowers, a “handcrafted, home-brewed, well-tempered, vintage, artisanal, adventure pop band.” Tickets are $5 with an additional $2 charge for anyone under 21.

When: October 3
Where: Casa Nueva

Casa Nueva’s second round of Battle of the Bands.

Who: Trust Me Dance Party with DJ B-Funk
When: October 4, 10 p.m.
Where: Casa Nueva

The Trust Me Dance Party is a dance party with no rules and a variety of different music genres. Brandon Thompson, also known as DJ B-Funk, is a DJ and producer based out of Ohio who plays a plethora of different events: weddings, proms, birthdays, corporate events, festivals and more.

Who: Inoculous, Baileyrp, Takata Airbags
When: October 4, 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

Inoculous is an instrumental math rock band from Athens who last performed at Casa Nueva on September 21. Baileyrp, a local upcoming singer/songwriter, will open the show.

Who: Larry Elefante and Fickle Hellcat
When: October 5
Where: Casa Nueva

Larry Elefante is described as a country rock and roll ensemble from Brooklyn, New York. Through the years, the band’s lineup has gone through various member changes, but it currently has eleven members who now reside in Youngstown, Ohio. Opening for them will be Fickle Hellcat, a vintage indie rock group.

Who: Wastemen, King Buu, Tomorrow Daily
When: October 5
Where: The Union

The Wastemen, a local garage punk band, released their self-titled EP over a year ago on September 1, 2018, and will perform at The Union in early October. Opening for them will be King Buu, a garage rock band from Cleveland, Ohio, and Tomorrow Daily, a local indie rock band.

Who: ACRN Presents: Battle of the Bands
When: October 10
Where: The Union

ACRN will host its annual Battle of the Bands on October 10. Local bands will compete for a grand prize of $150 cash and an ACRN In-Studio recording experience. More information will be posted on ACRN.com closer to the event.

Who: DJ Barticus Y2k Millennium Dance Party
When: October 11
Where: The Union

Michael Bart, also known as DJ Barticus, is a well-known local party DJ who is described as “the most YOLO jumpsuit wearing DJ ever.”

Who: Angela Perley, Souther
When: October 12
Where: The Union

Angela Perley is a folk and cosmic country, indie-rock singer from Columbus, Ohio. She recently released her first LP, 4:30, on August 2, and it contains love songs with exceptional lyrics and dreamy instrumentals. Opening for Perley will be Souther, a garage soul band also from Columbus, Ohio.

Who: DANA, KAIBA, Hidden Places
When: October 18
Where: The Union

DANA is a psychedelic punk band from Columbus, Ohio, who recently released a new album titled Glowing Auras and Black Money on September 27. Hidden Places, a Columbus-based post-punk and indie-rock band and an ACRN Lobsterfest alum, will open the show.

Who: Pale Grey Lore, Horseburner, Unmonumental
When: October 19
Where: The Union

Pale Grey Lore is a psychedelic garage doom band from Columbus, Ohio. Their second album, Eschatology, was released on September 6. Horseburner is a heavy and stoner metal rock group from Parkersburg, West Virginia, whose music is said to be comparable to the hard rock group Thin Lizzy. Unmonumental is a local punk and metal band featuring four veterans of the Athens music scene.

Who: Graham Nash
When: October 19, 8 p.m.
Where: Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium 

Graham Nash is a former member of the English pop-rock group the Hollies and the folk-rock group Crosby, Stills and Nash, and he will perform as part of the Ohio University Performing Arts Series. He is also a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, a two-time Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee and a Grammy Award winner.

Who: HallOUween at CASA with Tangled Roots and Rockstead
When: October 26
Where: Casa Nueva

The Tangled Roots perform a plethora of music genres including funk, EDM, jazz, hip hop, soul and psychedelic rock. The eight members of the group all come from different musical backgrounds and make them the diverse electro-funk group that they are. Opening for The Tangled Roots will be the reggae-rock band Rockstead from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Who: Halloween with The Coal Cave Hollow Boys
When: October 31, 9 p.m.
Where: The Smiling Skull 

The Coal Cave Hollow Boys are a Columbus-based bluegrass band who mix rock and classic country into their unique sound. They also recently won first place in the 2019 Pinecastle National Bluegrass Band Competition.
