What’s Going On: February 2020

Who: Winter Wilson and Dallas Craft
When: February 5 at 8:30 p.m.
Where: The Front Room

Winter Wilson is a singer-songwriter from Athens, Ohio. Typically, she plays at local venues, including Donkey Coffee, where she recently performed. Find more information here.

Who: Shadow in the Moon and Caitlin Kraus
When: February 6 at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Casa Nueva

Shadow in the Moon consists of Jessica Bouffioux and Kurt McGinnis, a “spooky folk rock” group from Lancaster. Caitlin Kraus, an Athens based singer songwriter, will also perform, with bandmates Matt Box on bass and Mark Hellenberg on drums. The event is free, but donations are appreciated. Who: DJ Barticus
When: February 6 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

With an event described as “Gyration Nation,” The Union is encouraging people to register to vote through “A Dance Liberation for Voter Registration” with DJ Barticus. The event is free, but has a $2 charge for attendees under 21. Find more information here.

Who: The Big Cover-Up XXI
When February 7 at 9pm
Where: The Union

This is a special event hosted by The Union where each band playing picks an artist and exclusively plays their music during the set. The bands featured include Infinite Improbability Drive covering Radiohead, Gorilla Party covering Blink 182, Sneakthief covering Hall and Oates, Acrylic Grooves covering Jimi Hendrix and Vonte’ Moon covering J.Cole. The event is free but all donations go to the Athens County Humane Society; a $5 donation is recommended. Find more information here.

Who: Mistar Anderson trio w/ Draft Picks and Acrylic Grooves
When: February 8 at 10 p.m.
Where: Casa Nueva Restaurant

Mistar Anderson is a hip hop, funk and soul group from Columbus. Acrylic Grooves is a local Athens band said to have an electrifying sound and who plays genres from jazz to rock ‘n’ roll to blues. Find more information here. 

Who: TasteFull
When: February 8 at 10 p.m.
Where: Smiling Skull Saloon

TasteFull is self-described as the “Cincinnati Sound,” mixing the sound of rock’s past into the sounds of today’s rock. They hope to push the “direction of modern rock towards a new horizon” with an elaborate vision of rock’s future. Find more information here. 

Who: Waves
When: February 8 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

This is the second Waves of 2020 hosted by DJ HEX and The Union, where local house DJs each play EDM sets. Find more information here.

Who: Kaiba, Inoculous, Friends for Sale
When: February 13 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

Kaiba is a local band specializing in screamo, emotive hardcore music. Inoculous is another Athens band who plays math rock. Friends for Sale is an alternative, indie rock band who traveled all the way from Madisonville, Kentucky. Find more information here

Who: ACRN Valentine’s Day Prom with GrandAce and Moonbeau
When: February 14 at 8:30 p.m.
Where: The Union

ACRN is hosting its annual Valentine’s Day Prom; this year, the event features GrandAce and Moonbeau. GrandAce is a hip-hop group from Cincinnati who takes inspiration from artists like Andre 3000 and Sade. Moonbeau is an electronic pop group also from Cincinnati. Find more information here.

Who: Goddess Collective Burlesque
When: February 15 at 8 p.m.
Where: Athens Uncorked

Athens Uncorked will host its annual Heartbreaker’s Ball featuring the Goddess Collective Burlesque. The event is $10 for people paying with cash and $12 for those paying with credit or debit cards. Find more information here. 

Who: Cardboard Sailors, Warp and Six Foot Roses
When: February 15 at 9 p.m.
Where: Casa Nueva Restaurant 

Six Foot Roses are a grunge/alternative/funk band traveling from Monroe, Michigan, and they will perform with Athens “five-piece dreamy rock band” The Cardboard Sailors and locals Warp. Find more information here.

Who: DJ Barticus Y2k Millennium Dance Party
When: February 15 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

DJ Barticus will perform again at The Union, this time for a Millennium Dance Party. Tickets are $3 for people over 21 and $5 for those under 21. Find more information here.

Who: Invoke
When: February 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Baker University Center

Invoke is a multi-string quartet weaving musical influences of bluegrass, fiddle tunes and jazz. They have recently won major prizes at international competitions and are currently based in Austin, Texas. Find more information here.

Who: DJ B-Funk presents The Athens DJ Showcase
When: February 20 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

DJ B-Funk presents the Athens DJ Showcase, which will feature any interested DJs. The organizers are currently accepting entries from SoundCloud until February 16. Find more information here.

Who: Arc4g+ 10th Birthday Bash!
When: February 20 at 10 p.m.
Where: Casa Nueva 

Casa Nueva is hosting the Arc4g+ 10th Birthday Bash featuring bands Harlot, The Infinite Improbability Drive, Big Wet Dream and Style$tar. The event is free, but donations are encouraged and go to the Athens Rock Camp for Girls. Find more information here.  

Who: Tomorrow Daily, Gorilla Party, Laguna Scuzz
When: February 21 at 9 p.m.

WLCI and Blackout presents bands Tomorrow Daily, Gorilla Party and Laguna. Tickets are $5 at the door. Find more information here. 

Who: Jeanie and the Dreamers, Don Baker
When: February 21 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Donkey Coffee

Donkey Coffee presents singer-songwriter Don Baker and musical trio Jeanie and the Dreamers. Find more information here.

Who: BareFuzz, Freak Mythology, Velvet Green
When: February 22 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

Columbus psychedelic blues-funk band BareFuzz will perform with Cincinnati funk-rock band Freak Mythology and Athens band Velvet Green. Find more information here.

Who: NOTS, DANA, Taung Child
When: February 28 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

NOTS, a noise-punk band from Memphis, Tennessee, will perform at The Union on Feb. 28. Avant-garage band DANA, from Columbus, will open alongside Athens band Taung Child. Find more information here.

Who: WOUB presents: Ken Stringfellow plays “Touched” & more
When: February 28 at 7 p.m.
Where: Donkey Coffee

WOUB presents Ken Stringfellow at Donkey Coffee. Ken Stringfellow, founding member of The Posies, will strip his 30+ year career to just a man and his guitar on Feb. 28. Find more information here.

Who: Fiesta Latina
When: February 29 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Union

The Ohio University Latino Student Union presents a night filled with Latin music. Tickets are $3 for people over 21 and $5 for those under 21. Find more information here.
