This February, multitalented Canadian musician Mitch Davis announced the release of The Haunt, his debut album set to release through Arbutus Records on April 29th of this year. The announcement is joined by North American tour dates scheduled for this September as well as the pre-release single “Let it Die” and a music video along with it.
Davis has been busy since 2020 pouring everything into this solo album. According to the official Grandstand press release, the songs are all written and performed by the musician on equipment he built himself at his home studio. This ensures that the album will be something special, infused with Davis’s wide range of influences from experimental Rock to Funk, Jazz, and Hip Hop. The songs on this album capture the DIY attitude of the pandemic era — dealing with depressing subjects in deceivingly upbeat songs.

The single, “Let it Die” and accompanying video capture this feeling perfectly. It is a funk-filled tune full of some fun synth sounds but also very guitar-centric. The music video matches that feeling perfectly with a collage-art style animation that encapsulates the personal, self-made uniqueness of the song.
Davis said to Grandstand, “lyrically, it’s about calling it quits really early on when you sense there might not be a future, sparing yourselves from drawing it out in a painful way.” Without listening to the words this song would appear to be about something much happier, but Davis subverts that expectation with a cheeky demeanor.
