Two years after their sophomore album, Tell Me That It’s Over and the remaster release of “WISH ME LUCK”, Wallows returns with a new single, “Your Apartment”, that is accompanied by a music video.

This song is instantly catchy with the intro guitar riff catching the ear, being a simple repeating motif, followed by the rest of the band joining in and filling out the song. The lyrics follow memories of a past relationship breakup and how one must hold back to avoid arguments and other mishaps.

I’d go as far to say it is simply about two people who are not meant to be but have been put in a situation together. All that said, while this content does sound rather depressing and gray, Wallows has a great way of making these topics infectious and fun through their instrumentation.

While the verses are simple, the overall mood and high tempo of this song carry a lot of the weight of feeling like a happier song than it may seem. Dylan Minnettes vocals in the verses are almost whispered just to ramp up to the pre-chorus and chorus where he opens up and puts his vocals on full blast showing much more emotion in these sections, making them memorable and danceable. The overall track is an earworm in of itself, it will get stuck in your head.

While the video follows suit with the overall theme of the song being bare bones and simple, it is aesthetically very pretty to watch. It conveyed the overall feeling of what I think the song is attempting to do. Again, while the song is simple with meaningful lyrics, I think the highlight of Minnette singing the song with a casual zoom out to the rest of the band is profound.

The color choices throughout the video are also very characteristic, beginning with the teal and flashing lighter colors until it ends up staying at a darker blue and purple as the song progresses. It sticks to the “sad song” idea but with cheerful melodies.

Overall, I think the track is a great comeback from the trio and it is definitely a good start for what could potentially be a string of new singles to come out, or even some singles that could lead to an album, which lead guitarist Braeden Lemasters hinted at on his Instagram earlier this year
