Aphex Twin has been a pillar in the ambient, electronic, and techno genres and while his music is not limited to these and expresses a unique flexibility across genres, it’s understood that Aphex Twin has found his calling with this album’s sound.

On Tuesday, he released a single containing the songs “#3” and “Rhubarb Orc. 19.53 Rev.” The songs are part of the expanded version of his second full-length album, titled Selected Ambient Works Volume II

Instrumentally, “#3” delivers everything one might expect from an ambient song. Resonant and dynamic synths that ease the mind and body are just the foundation of what makes this song so impactful and enjoyable to listen to. Originally released in the 1994 version of Selected Ambient Works Volume II , 30 years later, “#3” withstands the test of time. It has no intense beat or lyrics, and instead offers a rather tranquil and untroubled few moments between the listener and the music. As I listened, I watched the sun slowly dip below the horizon and cast a surreal array of colors: indigo, burnt orange, and light streaks of olive. This scene blended perfectly with the serenity of the synths found in “#3”.

“Rhubarb Orc. 19.53 Rev” opens with an enchanting quality reminiscent of a fairy tale and pulls you into a dreamscape, which many of his songs have the tendency to do. The violins ebb and flow, creating a lush atmosphere as a choir briefly sings to you, hinting at secrets hidden in the melody. To balance the tenderness, a steady bass emerges accompanied by horns that add a golden layer of mystique. While “#3” is a good song on its own, “Rhubarb Orc. 19.53 Rev” is the standout. Coupled together, they conjure forth a transcendent listening experience that is original while staying true to Aphex Twin’s unique sound. As always, I am eagerly awaiting his next release. Each project serves as an open invitation to explore the depths and intricacies of his sound, encouraging us to appreciate the artistry behind Aphex Twin’s creation.
