After two years Sky Ferreira has released a new song for A24’s upcoming movie, Babygirl. The song, titled “Leash,” was written specifically for the movie and co-written by Jorge Elbrecht. The song discusses the themes of shame, feeling trapped and perseverance, which the main character of the movie, played by Nicole Kidman, experiences.
The new release comes after Ferreira recently discussed her relationship with Capitol Records, her former label. In an interview with Vogue, she said the label “kept me from putting out new music for 10 years” and that she had been trying to release music for the last several years.

The singer also said she related to the movie’s plot, inspiring her to write a song for it: “[Nicole Kidman’s] character is very self-destructive and destructive with other people’s lives, but she kinda has to go through this whole experience for the sake of growing as a person. I think that’s why I connected to the material so much, even though my circumstances are so different from the world of the film.”
Ferreira plans to self-release new music in 2025 as an independent artist, planning for more live performances in the future.
