In this sentimental second edition of “Listen If You Miss:,” we are covering English indie rock band, Her’s. Consisting of Audun Laading [right] and Stephen Fitzpatrick [left], Her’s was active from 2016 to 2019, with two spectacular studio albums released. As many fans know, the band and tour manager Trevor Engelbrektson were tragically killed in a head-on traffic collision in Minneapolis, MN, on March 27, 2019. In the brief period they were given to share their art with the world, they resonated with audiences and established their influence. Had they been given more time, it is no question that they would have solidified their standing as one of the most popular indie bands of this decade. Their dreamy and eccentric sound touched the hearts of fans and left them missing the band dearly. Take a peek at this list of tunes to listen to for when you’re missing Her’s, and want something similar to hold close to your heart.

1.)Condemned to Be Freaky” by Brad stank

Mr. stank starts our list off right because both Fitzpatrick and Laading were a part of his band before they became a duo. So, before Her’s was born, and before Brad stank was Brad stank, he was Sundogs. Stephen played drums and Audun was on bass. In fact, that’s how the two met. With forlorn lyrics, chimes and Brad stank’s assured vocals, “Condemned to Be Freaky” is the perfect wind-down and chill jam. It suits just about any activity your heart desires (that requires a mellow tune).

2.)Put Your Number in My Phone” by Ariel Pink

In an interview with writer Rob Hakimain, Laading mentioned how Fitzpatrick showed him this song and he was instantly hooked. He described its music video as a “pivotal moment.” It’s easy to hear that Her’s drew inspiration from Ariel Pink– the stacked vocals, subtle echoes and delicately placed high notes earns “Put Your Number in My Phone” a secure spot on our list.

3.)Slap Pie” by Men I Trust

Men I Trust is a Canadian indie band that delivers nothing but groove. “Slap Pie” is purely instrumental, with layered guitars and an incredibly funky slap bass. Men I Trust uses light, wavy synths to bring this song to the next level.

4.) Finally I Will Know Myself” by ARTHUR

We have another solid instrumental track that shines and twinkles from start to finish. ARTHUR is the alias of Philadelphia alternative indie musician, Arthur Shea. “Finally I Will Know Myself” is doused in synths and sounds like waking up from a peculiar dream, or travelling through space, whichever suits your fancy. The slow build throughout the track certainly makes for a phenomenal listening experience.

5.)All My Love” by Trudy and the Romance

Trudy and the Romance are an indie pop band from Liverpool, England, whose unique flair for the dramatics shines through in their retro and romantic style. “All My Love” hits the ground running and kicks off in a whirlwind of dreamlike nostalgia. It makes this list because of frontman Oliver Taylor’s ritzy musicality, and his ability to transport you into the silver age of jukeboxes.

6.) For Maurice” by Hobby Club

This track comes directly from Her’s playlist: Ear Tapas. This song sounds like Her’s instrumentals crossed with Morrisey vocals in the best way. Her’s fans are sure to appreciate this eclectic track. Based in London, Hobby Club is a jangle-pop duo whose cheerful atmosphere and whimsical instrumentals put a smile on my face and hopefully yours too.

7.)Feather Boy” by Pro Teens

Pro Teens is an indie rock band from Melbourne, Australia. The jaunty baseline in this tune really shines and fits into its spot on this list quite well. A breezy whistle at its start signals that this track coats along naturally and invites the listener to coast right along with them. These boys from the land down under will surely capture your heart.

8.) Shy Eyes” by Mind’s Eye

Based in Los Angeles, CA, Mind’s Eye is an alternative indie band led by Vince Lopez. “Shy Eyes” features lyrics brimming with yearning set to an upbeat tune (sound familiar?). The swanky guitar riffs and catchy beat in this tune closely mirror that of Her’s, and subsequently closes out our list.
