Pinks Turns Blue formed in the mid-80s and have often been credited as one of the founders of gothic rock. “Black Swan” carries on their long legacy of darkwave aesthetics and alternative sounds. Lead singer Mic Jogwer’s sings slowly on top of a simple and repetitive piano line that lets listeners feel the weight of each melancholic lyric. The song is mystifying and introspective, with Jogwer stating that the meaning is about “pondering your goals in life” in an interview with Post-Punk.com.
This theme of reflection is not lost in the lyrics, as Jogwer sings harrowing lines like “While I travel the earth / See the wonders of world / Chill in the sunshine” and “Seems like nothing’s missing / I can make ends meet / While I’m biding my time / But I Know There Is More to Life.”
Pre-order for the Black Swan (But I Know There Is More to Life) vinyl is now available on the band’s bandcamp.
