After consistently dropping an album every year for the past three years, Kali Uchis is back with a taste from her upcoming release, Sincerely,. Our first glimpse solidifies what we can expect from the rest of the album: an “R&B meets bedroom pop” sound paired with her most emotionally vulnerable lyrics to date.

“Sunshine & Rain…” takes listeners to a sonic paradise with dreamy synths and R&B influences. Electric guitar creeps through the song adding even more dimension to the track. Her sound takes us back to her 2018 Isolation album with similar lofi production and atmospheric beats while Uchis’ sultry voice drives the song further.

Uchis delves more into her gift of vulnerability in this track. Opening with a verse about her personal karma and emotional turbulence she’s been through, she ends it with, “Riding through the storm brought much needed clarity,” bringing us to the thesis of the song. The chorus springs into a love song about surviving through the good and bad alongside a lover, and furthermore becoming someone “that makes the Earth feel heavenly.” This song serves almost as end credits to what Uchis has experienced in the past, both appreciating the dark and embracing the light.

While “Sunshine & Rain…” is equally tranquil, romantic and catchy, it can’t help but not move her sound forward. For being one of the most consistent and hardworking artists of the decade, her sound has stayed stagnant. On the other hand, despite not having an audible evolution, her lyrics are just getting more and more personal and true to herself.

Kali Uchis provided a strong and memorable start to Sincerely, with “Sunshine & Rain…” that the rest of the album will hopefully follow. Sincerely, will release May 9 via Capitol Records.
