If nothing else, The Last Dinner Party is serving consistency with their recent single “The Scythe,” released on September 5 as one of two singles for the upcoming album From The Pyre, which is set to release on Oct. 17.

Lyrically, “The Scythe” is a touching song about the death of a loved one. The song is not particularly sad, however; instead, it focuses on love and connections that can transcend death. Simultaneously, the lyrics present a yearning and a hope that our loved ones are not far from us, even in death. The song can also be considered an allegory for the end of a strong, meaningful relationship.
Although the song is well-made and enjoyable, “The Scythe” is sonically very similar to the rest of The Last Dinner Party’s discography, which becomes rather monotonous at times. The instrumental aspect of “The Scythe” is well done, but does not offer anything new in comparison to The Last Dinner Party’s previous releases.
Excluding the context of the rest of The Last Dinner Party’s discography, “The Scythe” is overall likable and well executed.
