As we creep closer and closer to Halloween, it is time to get into the festive spirit and welcome Lost Flamingo Theatre Company’s (LFC) annual “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” shadow cast to the stage. LFC, Athens’ student-run theatre company, is following tradition and bringing the production to The Union Bar on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. this week.
Many associate “Rocky Horror” with Halloween because of the original 1975 film’s eccentric take on horror and wild costuming. It is renowned as a cult classic and has been honored with live screenings and shadow casts that encourage audiences to not only dress in their finest fishnets and corsets, but to interact with a form of “call and response.” This fanfare may be overwhelming to a “Rocky Horror virgin” — an affectionate term used to refer to people who have not experienced a “Rocky Horror” shadow cast — but a cast member is here to quell any fears.

“‘Rocky Horror’ is more than just a flipped Frankenstein adaptation,” Elijah Shafer, a junior in this year’s cast who is studying AYA Integrated Social Studies, said. “It celebrates living a life free from fear – to liberate yourself from all ‘societal norms’ and be your true self. That is what keeps people coming back. It shows us that being different isn’t a bad thing, it’s what makes us unique and special. It promotes a deep self-understanding and respect that can be enjoyed by all.”
This is Shafer’s second year in the production, and he plays the beloved character of Eddie, who is known for his musical number “Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul).” Indeed, “Rocky Horror” is inspired by Mary Shelley’s trope of “making a monster,” but the show is most importantly an homage to authenticity and liberation.
The show’s almost grotesque and raunchy depiction of individuality captures audiences year after year, making it a cultural staple.
“You will never experience anything quite like ‘Rocky Horror,’” Shafer said. “The atmosphere, the costumes, music, people and so many other factors make it such a memorable time. Also, the cast and crew has put in a lot of work to bring you a show for all to enjoy.”
For those who are still weary, Shafer lends a piece of advice and invites the community to get involved.
“Have an open mind!” Shafer said. “It can be overwhelming, but come in expecting to be surprised. There’s no reason to be nervous. The atmosphere and energy will clear that right up, I can promise you that.”
Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a “Rocky Horror virgin,” the cast welcomes you to the show, so “give yourself over to absolute pleasure” and attend “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” this week at The Union Bar, Oct. 8-11. Doors open at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10 for ages 18+ and $8 for ages 21+ and they are available at the door. Arrive early, dress up and be ready for a night of fun and theatrics.
