Indie rock band Snail Mail released a new single, “Dead End.” The single comes in anticipation of the release of their third studio album, Ricochet, set to come out on March 27. Snail Mail fans all around are jumping with joy at the news of a new album; after all, it has been 5 years since their last album Valentine.

Comparing this track to their 2016 EP Habit, which was released about 10 years ago, it’s insane to see the progress that has been made within this time. “Dead End” seems to mark new territory for Snail Mail, bringing a more upbeat and louder sound than the rest of their discography.

The lyrics, stating, “Couldn’t ever be the same / To be loved is to be changed” are almost healing, emphasizing the way that love can change you. Yet, you can grow beyond the experience, holding it to be a part of you. At the same time, there’s a strong message about letting go: “I really hope you get the life you want.”

One thing that Snail Mail never compromises is the clarity of vocals, and this track is no exception. The guitar blends perfectly with the drums, accentuating the vocals as well — not to mention how catchy the whole track is.

“Dead End” evokes nostalgia I didn’t even know was possible to unlock. It feels like it was featured in some sort of coming-of-age movie that somehow everyone forgot about. Snail Mail seems to have more tricks up their sleeves when it comes to this album, and I can’t wait to hear what’s in store for the band.
