[No Love; 2022]

Rating: 9/10

“SLUT ME OUT” by Memphis rapper NLE Choppa is easily the best trap song in recent memory. The song has a horrorcore style beat reminiscent of a vintage horror film, with libidinal and liberating lyrics. The first set of lines heard in the song constitute the infectious pre chorus, featuring sexual revolutions like “spit in my face when you fuck me” and “eat the dick like you was ugly”. Already, the nature of this song is curious. There’s something almost passive about several of the bars throughout the song.

Many times throughout “SLUT ME OUT”, Choppa subverts sexual norms. Lines like the aforementioned “spit in my face when you fuck me” describe sexual acts being performed on Choppa that are not convergent with the zeitgeist of masculine sexuality. The androgyny of roles here makes the song an anthem for anyone who enjoys sex, regardless of orientation, role, or gender. It is universal.

There are plenty of authoritative lyrics as well, such as “Fuck you anywhere / I’m that type guy / at the church, on the plane, at the basketball game”. Here Choppa plays an active role in his lust, describing his love for doing the deed regardless of location, listing several public and taboo places.

The song spits in the face of being locked down, focusing on sexual freedom in place of the monogamy that plagues dominant culture. This is seen when Choppa raps “her favorite thing to say is cuff me” after a round of lines about sexual debauchery. The cry for a relationship from this woman is met with the chorus, a titular chanting of the phrase “slut me out”, implying Choppa has turned down her desire to be “cuffed” lest he forsake his liberty.

The phrase also calls into question the roles that Choppa holds in his fantasies. Slut is a word primarily claimed by or utilized against women, and yet Choppa is incredibly cavalier to claim it for himself. The reclamation of the word slut is one of the best parts of this song, and part of what makes it so anthemic. It allows all people who identify with the word to sing along proudly, boasting their autonomy over their bodies.

Furthermore, the phrase “me out” implies that the verb “slut” (perhaps to be interpreted as a synonym of “pimped”) is being done to Choppa rather than by Choppa. This reversal of tropes shows that Choppa simply has a love for the game (of sex), rather than strong stake in what his role in it is.

The song must also be noted for its incredible humor, although it is perhaps candid from Choppa’s perspective. Lines like “don’t cum quick, I control my bladder” and “fat coochies, little coochies / all coochies matters” are intensely funny, and the co-opting of the offensive phrase “all lives matter” is delightful. It sees an inflammatory statement flipped on its head to be about claiming body-positivity for a body part often scrutinized with misogyny.

The verse builds to its culmination, ending with “meat to meat, wall to wall / coochie to my balls”. If you’re not smiling by now there’s something wrong with you. The song accomplishes a lot in its barely two-minute run time. Due to its attention-demanding and subversive lyrics, and its edgy beat, the song pulls in a listener and keeps them hooked the entire time it plays. It does everything a good trap song should do, quickly rising to the ranks in the canon of trap music, alongside greats like Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” and Travis Scott’s “3500”. Both of these songs are epics within the genre, and “SLUT ME OUT” demands a seat at the table next to them. It is a seat well earned.
